Low-cost vet care in California

We list 6 nonprofit clinics in San Francisco, San Jose, Milpitas, Pasadena and San Diego, run by San Francisco SPCA, Humane Society Silicon Valley, Pasadena Humane and San Diego Humane Society. Every detail comes from the organization's own website.

Before you go to a low-cost clinic

  • Book early. Many nonprofit clinics open appointments in batches and fill up fast. Some take walk-ins only until they hit capacity.
  • Expect a deposit. Many clinics charge a small booking deposit that's credited to your bill but lost if you no-show.
  • Check eligibility. Some programs are limited to certain ZIP codes, service areas or household incomes. Others are open to everyone.
  • Bring records. Past vaccine records can save you a repeat shot, and many surgery clinics require proof of rabies vaccination.
  • Ask for an estimate. Get the full price, including bloodwork, medications and add-ons, before treatment starts.

Most low-cost clinics can't handle emergencies. If your pet is having trouble breathing, collapses, has a seizure, is bleeding heavily or may have eaten something toxic, go to the nearest emergency vet now.
